Israel extends Sheikh Raed Salah’s detention

An Israeli court in Rishon LeZion extended the detention of head of the Islamic Movement, Sheikh Raed Salah, yesterday for four days, in order to question him on suspicion of inciting terrorism and violence and supporting a banned organisation.

Israeli police forces arrested stormed Sheikh Salah’s home in Umm Al-Fahm on Tuesday, arresting him on charges of inciting violence and terrorism. The magistrates’ court decided at the time to detain him for a renewable period of three days.

Israeli police said: “Serious accusations have been directed against Sheikh Salah, including inciting terrorism and violence, affiliation with a legally banned organisation and giving an inciting sermon.”

In a statement issued yesterday, it added: “Sheikh Salah was detained for questioning under caution regarding suspicions of incitement and supporting the actions of a banned and outlawed organisation,” referring to the Islamic Movement.

The Israeli government banned the Islamic Movement in November 2015 under the pretext that it carries out provocative actions against Israel.
